The Habitat Protection Fund

The Habitat Protection Fund is for not-for-profit community conservation groups in New Zealand involved in hands-on ecological restoration or conservation.

The purpose of this fund is to encourage and promote the conservation of New Zealand's natural environment.  Funding is provided for local habitat protection groups working to protect significant conservation areas in their community.

The Habitat Protection Fund is currently open.  Please visit www.wwf.org.nz for more information.  The next funding round closes on 19 May 2010.

HPF Priorities

We give preference for funding projects that protect areas of high conservation value. The Habitat Protection Fund priorities in 2010 are:

The priorities for Habitat Protection Funding are:

  • Projects in areas close to population centres and with active communities engaged in conservation
  • Projects in areas where there are remaining patches of high quality habitat containing populations of indigenous plants and animals but which are threatened by habitat fragmentation, changes in land use or invasive species
  • Projects working to address water quality/habitat restoration of freshwater ecosystems; rivers, streams and wetlands,
  • working at a landscape or catchment scale with a range of stakeholders to promote sustainable land use

Two funds

As of March 2010 the HPF is split into two funds - the HPF Development Fund and the HPF Projects Fund.
